The market currently has several types of tattoo guns available, many of which employ a very sharp needle. There are also guns out there that use more than just the needle, although they aren?t ideal for strict lines or designing, as some tattoos styles require. Single needle tattoo guns are generally considered to be best for most tattoo applications, though they require the needles need to be traded out for a fresh one out after each tattoo. Tattoo needles, in particular, can prove to be very hazardous if not disposed of immediately, as this can lead to a serious infection if one were to use them repeatedly, without being properly disposed of or disinfected.

It's important not to confuse this method with the method known as ?jailhouse" tattooing. This type of tattooing is literally found in jails and prisons, not using a proper tattoo gun, but using homemade material for a gun. Typically, the jailhouse tattoo artist will make their own makeshift "guns", using items such as batteries and needles from ordinary ink pens. As one might imagine, these tattoos aren?t terribly safe, and get infected on a regular basis. As skin is punctured to inject the ink, the makeshift tattoo "gun" will literally jerk, rip, and pull the skin, ripping it open and going quite deep with the ink.
